Ok so like the title says, I'm thinking about starting to play 40K. It will only be a casual hobby, starting very slowly as it is so dam expensive!

I like the way Orks look, they look really cool, but I've heard that they aren't very good, they are more of a Quantity army than a Quality army?

Space Marines are meant to be the best and easiest army from what I've heard. But I want to paint them Black, does that mean I have to run them as Chaos Space Marines?

Space Marines are a good choice because their more elite nature means their numbers are smaller and, therefore, better for collecting in smaller batches.

Black Space Marines don't have to be Chaos.

You can choose from Iron Hands & Raven Guard from First Founding. Angels of Vengence, Black Templars & Black Consuls from the Successor Chapters. Black Dragons, Scythes of the Emperor, Death Eagles, Sable Swords or Death Spectres from subsequents foundings.

If none of these grab your fancy then just create a chapter of your own devising with its own black colour scheme.

Hehe this means nothing to me sorry. I dont know anything about Warhammer. All I know is that there are Orks, Space Marines, Alien guys and some Robot Zombie things haha.

Even if I made Orks I would still want to paint them black lol. They would looks cooler that way Cheesy

what he was reffering to was the different factions of the space marines which are called chapters, basicly in the space marine book there are colour schemes have a flick though that give u ideas. also orks are not a BAD army in any way there are NO bad armys in 40k just bad players, simpley due to how every army works differently an not everyone realises how there ment to work. here is a lil information about the different races.

Oaks: combat basic army LOTS of numbers very hard to kill once in combat and can do alot of damage, lots of fun to play too

space marines: very balance army, easy to pick up but some of the better units are expensive points-wise(points are how u make sure u have even lists).

Chaos space marines: there like normal marines only in name there tricky to do in that they can specialy in different areas an be very felx able

Elder: one of the hardest armys to use lighter army then most things very specialist units but can be very gd only if used right which isn't as easy as it sounds

Tau: pretty much a long range shot u to death army an prey they don't get charged army

imperial guard: same as tau less kick in there weapons then the tau mostly best with numbers of heavy weapons and tanks

tyranids: they are a swarm army based mostly for close combat like orc but far quicker can do lot damage to tanks too with fair knowledge

necrons: necrons are the single hardest army to use in the game as they have the least units and require fair bit knowledge of the army to use right

dark elder: like normal elder but less specialist more combat based but very tricky to use right

Thanks Grimlock, that helped a lot Smiley

I'm going to have a play with Vinis Orks I think, see if I enjoy them. All sounds rather overwhelming at the moment, just like Magic.

Ok so I've decided, I've been looking at the 3 things that Games Workshop advise to look at when starting:
1. What they look like
2. What they sound like
3. What their tactics are like

I have come to a conclusion that the best looking and sounding models are Orks and Tyranids imo. Although I have no idea what the Tyranids tactics are like, I have a pretty good idea what Orks do, as I've read rather a lot about them. Lol I keep coming back to this and I'm sorry if its annoying anyone, but if I make Orks and I want to paint their skin Grey, what colour should I do their clothes? Brown maybe? Or Blue? I don't know what colour to do! I think Brown would look good. I know what colour I will make Tyranids, and that is Black so then they look like the Aliens of off the films lol.

Help Smiley

Ok so I looked a little more into this painting shizz, and I found there are tons of paint schemes for Space Marines and about 5 for Orks. I read up on what the ones for Orks mean, and so far I like the look of Evil Sunz and Goffs. I will probably keep their skin Green seeing as that's what Orks are supposed to be lol.
